Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Basque Donibane Garazi) is a town with 1521 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2007) in the French region Aquitaine Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It is located right on the border with Spain, 76 km from the English city of Pamplona, 53 km from the Atlantic coast (Gulf of Biscay) away, and belongs to the French Basque country. The city is the capital (Fr.: chef-lieu) of a separate canton.
was also formerly the city different names, namely Santa Maria Cabo el Puente or Sainte-Marie du Bout du Pont. The
modern name of the city ("Saint John at the foot of the pass) is derived from its location at the beginning of the pass road to Roncesvalles, Spain. The inhabitants are called in French Saint-Jeannais or Basque or Garaztar Donibandar.
In Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port unite the rivers and Laurhibar Nive d'Arnéguy the Nive Nive de Béhérobie and flow as the direction of the Bay of Biscay.
The city is an important place on the Camino Via Podiensis and last stop on French soil. The pilgrims then continues at the Camino Francés, in the Pyrenees, on the Ibañeta Pass, and finally leads to Pamplona to Santiago de Compostela.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port marks the end of the French pilgrimage route Via Podiensis, one of the Via Turonensis and Via Lemovicensis has already raised two important French pilgrimage routes, and the beginning of the Camino Francés, the rest of the way to Santiago de Compostela. For pilgrims, it is also the starting point for the Pyrenees crossing. For the ascent to Ibañeta pass the majority of the Route Napoleon is used in winter and in bad weather, many chose the path of pilgrims along the road link Valcarlos D933 - N135. Both lead to the Augustinian monastery in Roncesvalles, the first pilgrim station on English soil.
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port has several pilgrim hostels (gîte d'étape), hotels and private rooms (chambre d'hôtes), there is also a tourist information center, a campground, and a train station SNCF.

The support office for the pilgrims, decorated in Prioranerhaus (Casa Prioral), was inaugurated in 1993, simultaneously with the year of Santo Compostelano. The pilgrims can arrive in Orreaga-Roncesvalles is then issued to obtain any information and negotiate their accommodation within the Collegiate Church (Collegiate).
The pilgrims' hostel has 120 beds of Roncesvalles in a room which is housed in a former hospital with exposed stone blocks and high open ceiling. An absolute highlight among all the hotels on the road. The number of showers is a bit short, but
one is woken with sanftengregorianischen chorales (from CD). Old men and women to sleep in the bunks below and I am glad that I have a bed is allocated above. (Haha) After dinner (pilgrim menu)
was even offered a pilgrimage fair. The fair was held in English. In the end, the priest all the pilgrims gathered in front of the altar and gave the blessing pilgrims.
